A Vatican newspaper has ruled Tom Hanks’ new film Angels & Demons is “harmless” entertainment and not a danger to the church, according to reports.

The new film, adapted from the Dan Brown book of the same name, had its world premiere in Rome on 4 May, and the Italian newspaper L’Osservatore Romano featured a review of the film.

The newspaper reportedly praised director Ron Howard’s direction and also the reconstruction of landmarks such as St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.

It said the film is “more than two hours of harmless entertainment, which hardly affects the genius and mystery of Christianity”.

The newspaper added that it is “a video game that, first of all, sparks curiosity and is also, maybe, a bit of fun”.

Angels & Demons sees Hanks return as Professor Robert Langdon, who helps the Vatican to uncover a plot to set off a bomb in the Vatican. Hanks also played the role of Professor Langdon in The Da Vinci Code.

The praise comes after director Howard claimed that the Vatican interfered with his plans to obtain film permits to shoot in certain locations in Rome.
