Ugly Betty star America Ferrera has admitted it takes a lot of work to look as ugly as Betty in the hit show.
America, 25, plays the lead role in the US sitcom and said it takes her over an hour to become “Betty”.
She said: “Yes, people are surprised when they see I’m not like Betty in real life.”
She added: “Everyone knows that the power of good make-up, careful lighting and professional grooming can enhance beauty, but they don’t realise that you need all that to make yourself look, well, as ugly as Betty!”
America has been playing the role of Betty since 2006 and she said she often gets letters from fans thinking Betty is real.
She added: “Maybe because she doesn’t look anything special, people identify with her. I get letters all the time from people who think she is real, and they give me fashion tips for dressing better, telling me that if I smarten myself up I’ll be able to stand up to everyone better at the magazine.
“But isn’t that the point of the story? Betty wins out every week against all those who are trying to trip her up. In her innocent, naive way she’s smarter than everyone else – but neither she nor they realise it.”
