George Clooney drawn into dispute over film
George Clooney has been drawn into a dispute between a writer and a filmmaker claiming credit on a screen adaptation that Clooney stars in.
Documentary filmmaker John Sergeant alleges the writer of the movie The Men Who Stare At Goats has airbrushed him out of the movie’s credits.
Sergeant’s work inspired writer Jon Ronson to credit him in the pages of a book he wrote. The pair were said to be one-time best friends. But Ronson, whose work inspired The Men Who Stare At Goats, is accused of leaving out Sergeant’s contribution.
Sergeant told The Independent newspaper: “I worked intensely through 2003 and 2004 on it. I never formally agreed for the material I unearthed to be used in other media and I was extremely uncomfortable when it was, especially when I was airbrushed out of things. Ewan McGregor is playing this character who finds the story. [Jon] presents that person as [himself] but really, it is me.”
The credit given to Ronson, however, is loose. The filmmakers state that the work is “inspired by Jon Ronson”, the Times Of London reports.
Sergeant has now written to Clooney, a move he took when he was left off the guest list of the film’s screening at the London Film Festival on October 15.
But Stan Rosenfield, Clooney’s Los Angeles publicist, said: “George is not aware of any attempt to reach him.”
