The sleepy Los Angeles village of Westwood was swept with nocturnal Twilight mania.

Thousands of fans poured into the streets around UCLA hoping to catch a glimpse of Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart at the premiere of New Moon. The premiere was to be held at the Mann and Bruin theatres.

The movie is the second of the Twilight series of films, with Eclipse soon to follow.

Some of the fans arrived four days ago to secure a spot in the queue for the red carpet arrivals.

Nicole Zamora, 36, was sixth in line after starting on Thursday afternoon. She and her three sisters wore their own New Moon T-shirts and said they spent the weekend reading, listening to the iPod and trying to sleep.

Christina Fuentes and four of her friends came from New Jersey for the event. The 24-year-old wore vampire teeth, saying: “They just clip on.”
