US attorneys cast doubt on Polanski’s reported extradition fight

Embattled film director Roman Polanski, 76, will fight extradition to the United States, according to his French lawyer.

The lawyer’s comment was reported in the UK Sun as conflicting reports that he was not opposing American judicial process and that his French attorneys were not authorised to comment arose in the US.

Polanski has been detained in a Zurich jail since September on 30-year-old US search warrants on charges of unlawful sex with a minor. Throughout the imprisonment, authorities have claimed that any attempt to fight the extradition will prolong its process.

Meanwhile, his American legal team cast doubt over his French attorneys, saying their comments to the media were not authorised. “The French lawyers do not represent him in the case and do not speak for him about it,” they said in a written statement.

Los Angeles attorneys Bart Dalton, Doug Dalton and Chad Hummel wrote: “Any statements made in the press to the effect that Mr Polanski will not accept lawful orders of the courts, including relating to extradition, are not true.”
