Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey refuses to give her phone number to her own mother.

That’s the shocking claim being made by author Kitty Kelley in her new unauthorised biography about Oprah.

Kelley admitted in a recent interview that Oprah does take good care of her mother Vernita.

She buys her $50 hats and also gives her a car and a driver but just won’t hand over her personal number.

Kelley told the New York Times: “She buys $500 hats, and she has a very good life financially, but she can’t reach Oprah. Oprah will not give her mother her telephone number.”

RadarOnline.com also spoke to a source close to Oprah and confirmed Kelley’s claims.

The website added that Vernita has to call Oprah’s assistant and leave a message if she wants to speak to her daughter.

The source told RadarOnline: “The assistant tells Oprah what her mother wants and then the assistant calls Vernita back and tells her what Oprah said, although Oprah does talk to her mother directly at times.”

Britain’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan has revealed that he may have recently come under attack from US talk-show titan Oprah Winfrey.

Morgan, 44, revealed in his column for UK magazine Live that he had an object hurled at him from out of nowhere, while sunbathing by a pool in LA.

He said: “I was recovering by the pool of my hotel when an object suddenly crashed from a great height right next to my sun-lounger. I sprang upright and saw a shattered shampoo bottle.

“Seconds later, another cascaded down from one of the hotel’s upper floors, narrowly missing a woman lying close by.

“I shouted, ‘We’re under attack!’ And called in the hotel’s security men, who launched an immediate investigation. They never did find the culprits.”

He added: “But given that I was one of only three people by the pool at the time, and both bottles landed within four feet of me, I think we can safely assume I was the intended target.

“‘Know anyone staying up there at the moment who might hate me?’ I asked one of the hotel staff. ‘Have you done anything to offend Oprah Winfrey?’ came the unsettling reply.”

The US chatshow host had his audience in stitches as he unveiled the latest trick up his sleeve.

“I’ve decided to offer my services as America’s new Oprah,” he said. “Of course, it’s a big deal. Votes have been counted.”

He added: “Another thing Oprah is famous for is the time Tom Cruise got really weird on her show, jumping around and pumping his fists and saying ‘Wooo’.”

“As your new Oprah, I now present our very own wax Tom Cruise, jumping around just like the real one. You’re welcome, America.”

Last week, Winfrey announced that she would be quitting her long-running talk show in 2011, after 25 years on daytime TV.

Mayor Richard M Daley said that he is saddened by Winfrey’s decision to leave her show, which she records in the Windy city.

He said that adverse publicity surrounding the closing down of a major intersection in the city for the season premiere of Winfrey’s show had forced her hand.

He said: “That became a big rhubarb in the Chicago press – beat up Oprah. So you keep kicking people, people will leave, simple as that… I’m just saying that when someone’s doing something like that, most cities would love it…”

He added: “I don’t know why it became so controversial.”

“I’m embarrassed,” she writes. “I can’t believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I’m still talking about my weight. I look at my thinner self and think,
`How did I let this happen again?’”

In the piece, Winfrey, 54, tells about her recent struggles with an out-of-balance thyroid and how the condition made her develop “a fear of working out.” She says she’s added 40 pounds to her frame since she weighed 160 pounds in 2006.

“Yes, you’re adding correctly; that means the dreaded 2-0-0,” Winfrey writes. “I was so frustrated I started eating whatever I wanted — and that’s never good.”

I guess she’s just as normal as all of us.
